Sheng-Hung Lee Moderates "Constructing Reality" Panel for Design Conference

by Adam Felts

AgeLab Research Associate Sheng-Hung Lee was moderator of a discussion panel of designers titled “Constructing Reality,” which was part of RealityxDesign, HarvardxDesign’s ninth annual conference. HarvardxDesign is a student-run event organized by student clubs at the Harvard Business School and the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

The conference featured a multidisciplinary cohort of artists, curators, architects, and thinkers who explored examples of designers who play with notions of reality and discussed the roles and responsibilities they take on in doing so.

Lee’s panel explored a set of questions related to the power of designers to shape humans’ constructed realities: how do designers shape not only our present, but also our future? How much can they shape reality, and when do they simply have to confront the existing realities around us? Is technology an enabler, or a limiting force, for constructing our reality? What can we learn from a machine that we can’t learn from ourselves? The discussion encompassed topics related to future education, ethics, social responsibility, and new methods of research empowered by technology and data analytics.
