Why Your Retirement Plan Should Include Ice Cream

AgeLab Director Joseph Coughlin was interviewed in Barron’s on retirement planning, changes in perceptions of old age, and his 2017 book, The Longevity Economy.

Dr. Coughlin highlighted three three surprising quesions that determine quality of life in retirement, including our ability to make a spontaneous trip to get an ice cream cone. He says:

“The second-largest cost for people in retirement is transportation. We live in a country where if you don’t drive, you aren’t getting there. So, the ice cream cone question is about: Do you have the things that make retirement a quality life, and do you have the ability to get there?”
