Researchers Present at Transportation Research Board 100th Annual Meeting

AgeLab Research Scientist Pnina Gershon was a participant at the 100th Annual Transportation Research Board Meeting, presenting a paper on high risk sub-groups of teen drivers and their crash/near-crash involvement. The study was part of a collaboration with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which is part of the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Gershon also presented a poster entitled “Vehicle Access of Novice Teen Drivers and the Risk for Crash/Near-Crash Events”, and as a TRB member, attended the Operator Education and Regulation Committee and the Young Driver Sub-committee.
Additionally, former AgeLab Postdoctoral Associate Steven Landry presented a paper at the meeting titled "Exploring User Understanding of ADAS Iconography Using Novel Survey Methods." As advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) increase in functionality, so do the functional requirements of their visual displays to communicate status and settings. Drivers who misinterpret in-vehicle displays may be more likely to misuse or avoid using ADAS, negating potential safety benefits. Dr. Landry's paper proposes a novel evaluation method for in-vehicle visual displays and applies it to a newer Volvo car instrument cluster.
