Sophia Ashebir Presents on Transportation Planning and Aging for NEUTC Symposium

by Adam Felts

Sophia Ashebir, a Graduate Research Assistant at the MIT Agelab, presented her ongoing research at the 2nd Annual New England University Transportation Center (NEUTC) Symposium, which focused on transportation planning for an aging United States.

Ashebir’s poster served as a primer for an upcoming study that will examine how Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) are preparing to meet the evolving transportation needs of a growing older adult population. With the U.S. population aging rapidly and transportation recognized as a national priority that significantly affects health and well-being - particularly among older adults - her research aims to assess local and regional innovations as well as short-and long-term preparedness.

This study will include a national survey and a series of interviews to gather insights. The study’s domain interests include the role of technology, regional variations in planning approaches, partnerships and collaborations, and accessibility.
